04 - OWNER

A note from the owner

Andy Keil is a master electrician with 25 years in the trade, and he owns and runs Keil Electric San Antonio.

He came up through the trade doing the work himself, and he built the company around a simple rule: a licensed electrician walks every job, the scope goes in writing before anyone touches a wire, and the install is backed by a real warranty.

He runs San Antonio the same way as the San Diego shop: same standards, same written warranty, same refusal to hand a customer a vague verbal number. Andy is a U.S. military veteran and the company is family-run.

08 - COMMON QUESTIONS

Common questions for San Antonio.

What areas does Keil Electric San Antonio cover?

We cover the San Antonio metro across Bexar County and the surrounding Comal, Guadalupe, Wilson, Atascosa, Medina, Kendall, and Bandera counties. That takes in New Braunfels, Schertz, Cibolo, Converse, Universal City, Boerne, Helotes, Seguin, Floresville, Castroville, Bandera, and the communities around them. Outside that area for a larger job? Call us anyway, we travel.

What is the local phone number for Keil Electric San Antonio?

The local San Antonio line is (830) 214-8444, and a real person answers it, not a national call center taking a message. You can also reach the San Antonio team at sa@keilelectric.com.

Is Keil Electric San Antonio licensed?

Yes. Keil Electric holds Texas electrical contractor license #40645, and owner Andy Keil is the master electrician of record on it. Texas licenses are statewide, so that license covers the entire San Antonio metro. Every job is run by a licensed electrician, and we pull permits under that license.

What hours is the San Antonio team available?

Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, with Saturday and Sunday by appointment. We also run 24/7 emergency response across the metro for active power loss, sparking, or a burning smell.

Does Keil Electric have a shop you can visit in San Antonio?

Not a walk-in storefront yet. San Antonio is a service-area business, so we come to the property rather than asking you to come to a counter. Calls route to the local San Antonio line, and a licensed electrician meets you at the job.

Storms, freezes, and grid considerations

The weather here drives a real share of the electrical work, and it comes from two directions. Spring and summer bring thunderstorms with hail and high wind that take down service masts, weatherheads, and the overhead drops feeding older homes, especially out in the rural parts of the metro where the run from the pole to the house is long. Then there is the winter side. The February 2021 freeze put the entire state’s grid on the edge for days, and it changed how people around San Antonio think about backup power.

We install more standby generators and interlocks now than we ever did before that freeze, and the first question we ask is not what size unit you want, it is what you actually need running when the grid goes down. For a house on a well outside Boerne or Bulverde, losing the pump means losing water, which moves the whole calculation. CPS Energy owns the poles and the drop to your meter, but everything from the mast down is the property owner’s equipment, and after a storm that line decides who fixes what and how quickly the power comes back.

Texas code: TDLR, city permitting, and what it means

Texas licenses electricians and electrical contractors at the state level through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, and the license is statewide. That is why the same Keil Electric contractor license covers San Antonio, the surrounding counties, and the smaller towns in between. The National Electrical Code is adopted statewide, but each city runs its own permitting office and picks up new NEC cycles on its own timeline.

Inside the City of San Antonio, permits and inspections go through Development Services, and CPS Energy has to be coordinated with on anything that touches the service or the meter. Step outside the city into Bexar County or out to the smaller municipalities and the authority changes: Schertz, Converse, Boerne, New Braunfels, and the rest each maintain their own offices, while unincorporated communities like Lakehills and Pipe Creek have no city building department at all, so the requirements come from the county and your electric provider instead. We pull the permit through whichever authority actually governs the address, and we tell you which one that is before the work starts.

Historic neighborhoods, suburban growth, and the Hill Country

The San Antonio metro is really several housing markets stacked together, and the work changes with each one. Close to downtown, the 1920s and 1930s homes in Monte Vista, King William, Alamo Heights, and Olmos Park still carry original services, cloth-insulated wiring, and panels tucked into closets, so the work there is service upgrades and careful rewiring around plaster. The post-war neighborhoods inside Loop 410 bring 1960s and 1970s aluminum branch wiring and a few panel brands with known failure histories.

Out past 1604, and in the fast-growing suburbs like Cibolo, Schertz, Selma, and New Braunfels, most homes are already on 200-amp service, so the calls there are EV chargers, generators, and remodels rather than rewires. On the Hill Country edge, around Boerne, Bulverde, and Bandera, the work moves outdoors entirely: well pumps, shops, barns, and long feeders where voltage drop over distance drives the whole design. Knowing which of these an address sits in tells us most of what a job will need before we walk it.

How dispatch works across the San Antonio metro

Keil Electric San Antonio is a service-area business, which means we come to you rather than asking you to come to a counter. Calls and requests from these pages go to the local San Antonio line at (830) 214-8444, answered by a real person, not a national call center. For scheduled work we can usually reach most of the metro same or next day. For the towns farther out, the Wilson, Atascosa, Medina, and Bandera county communities, we group work in each direction where we can and give you an honest window rather than a vague promise.

For a genuine emergency, active power loss, sparking, or a burning smell, we roll a licensed electrician regardless of distance and tell you the ETA on the call. Andy Keil owns and runs the San Antonio location, and it operates the same way as the San Diego shop: a licensed electrician walks every job, the scope goes in writing before anyone touches a wire, and the install is backed by a written warranty.

What we tell every San Antonio customer

The same three things, whether you are in a 1920s bungalow near the river or a new build in Cibolo. First, get a real look before you get a price. We do not quote electrical work over the phone, because the number depends on what is actually at the property, and a guess helps no one. A licensed electrician walks the job and leaves you a fixed price for the scope as walked.

Second, the cheapest bid is rarely the cheapest job. Skipping the permit, oversizing a breaker to stop a trip, or swapping a device without checking the run all cost more later, and the summer heat here finds every marginal connection. Third, ask who is actually doing the work and whether they are licensed. We send licensed electricians and pull permits under our Texas license, because that is the part that protects you when it matters, at resale, at an insurance claim, or the day something goes wrong. That is the standard at every Keil Electric location, and San Antonio is no different.
